Why India Could Not Have Attacked Sri Lankan Players In Lahore

It is a conspiracy against Pakistan.” – General Pervez Musharraf, Former President of Pakistan

“There’s no way one can deny that Pakistan is not safe now. No country will want to send its players here for any tournament. This must be handiwork of outsiders.” – Imran Khan, Former Pakistan Team Captain.

They both were following the time tested method of avoiding blame by pointing fingers on outsiders.

India could not have attacked Sri Lankan Cricket Team

Now, however much the likes of General Musharraf and Imran Khan accuse foreign power, read India, of having masterminded and carried out the Lahore attack on Sri Lankan cricketers, I am certain of two things:

  • That it is the misfortune of General Saab and Imran Bhai that the foreign power they are pointing fingers at could not have done it, and
  • That it is also a good fortune of likes of me to have been born in a country where the leaders do not have the balls to retaliate in this fashion against their enemies! Ironic, but true. There has to be a difference between us and them.

Anyway I did not start writing this post to voice the above. The purpose of writing this article is to gently remind the men across the border that it is extremely likely that this dastardly act has been done by insiders, that is Pakistani Nationals.

The reason that the supporters of foreign hand theory are giving is that the loser in this entire deal is Pakistan. After all now countries and players will not want to deal with them. So why would a Pakistan national do it? – In fact Imran Khan quite aggressively and vehemently tried to state this on NDTV on Mar 4 at primetime news.

The argument is simple and seems quite logical on the surface. The underlying assumption here is that people are generally patriots and they would not do anything which will go against their own country.

Why insiders in Pakistan Could have Attacked Sri Lankan Cricket Team

In normal circumstances this argument will hold. However, if one looks at history and tries to find some lessons from it, then one would see that the obvious is not always true. I think there are three very strong reasons, which together or separately could have made certain citizens of Pakistan carry out these attacks:

  • There are times when certain ideologies are so strongly ingrained or brainwashed into people that they think that their acts, which in eyes of people at large are unpatriotic, are the only rational, natural and patriotic actions. The famous Burgess-Maclean-Philby story is a classic spy thriller (that started sometime in 1945 and culminated in 1964) which without any ambiguity demonstrates that even extremely intelligent people can be brainwashed so strongly that they think that their acts alone are patriotic and in the interest of their country. There are many such examples in history of people who have spied on their own country and supplied information to enemy states in the mistaken notion that their acts are actually patriotic.
  • The story of Taliban in Afghanistan started less than 15 years ago in September 1994. In real terms they remained the rulers of the strife torn country for just under 8 years. However in those 8 years what acts they did not commit which ensured that 99 percent of the countries on this planet did not do business with them. After all they were Afghans and they would have had the interests of Afghanistan at their heart. I am sure that is what the case was. However, what they thought was right for their country did not coincide with what the others thought. So they did their things and told the rest of the world to go and fly a kite (which incidentally was one of the many things they banned in their own country)!
  • It is unfortunate that I do not know Islam as conceptualized by Prophet Mohammad. However, from what I have been able to gather about the current thought on Islamic Jihad, one of the telling statements that I came across is attributed to Sayyeed Abdul A’la Maududi of Lahore, Pakistan (how ironic) which states, – “Islam wishes to destroy all States and Governments anywhere on the face of the earth which are opposed to the ideology and programme of Islam regardless of the country or the Nation which rules it. The purpose of Islam is to set up a State on the basis of its own ideology and programme, regardless of which Nation assumes the role of the standard bearer of Islam or the rule of which nation is undermined in the process of the establishment of an ideological Islamic State.” Elsewhere, I also found this advice to an Indian  muslim for his question on Islam and patriotism – “Muslims have to necessarily abide by Allah’s commandments regarding truth and justice. Therefore, they cannot adopt an attitude of blind patriotism or nationalism because it tends to instill into people a belief that their nation is superior to other nations, notwithstanding the principle of Family protection indiahuman equality and brotherhood upheld by Islam.” The point of these examples is that as per an Islamic jihadi or many Mullahs, Islam and patriotism cannot coexist. The advisor goes on to tell that a muslim should not join army if he lives in a non-muslim majority country.

It is high time that leaders and people in Pakistan cease to be ostriches and sit up and take note of the situation. Time has come for the Pakistan’s people to take things in their own hands and restore credibility for themselves and for their country. Otherwise Pakistan as dreamt by Jinnah will cease to exist and only jinns (ghosts) will be left behind.
